Intelligent Heating Controls can reduce your heating and hot water fuel bills by at least 20%.

When it comes to heating your home efficiently and wasting as little fuel and heat as possible, then a full set of heating controls is as essential as the right kind of boiler.

As their name implies, heating controls allow you to choose what rooms are heated to what temperature and for how long. They will also make sure that the boilers only turned on when it needs to be. It would be crazy to switch on every light in the entire house and all to the same brightness with one switch, but we do that with heating. And heating is at least seven or eight times more expensive than lighting in winter.

• More control over heating and hot water. Can set heating to come on before you get up at different times for the weekv
• Allows you to heat your domestic hot water without being forced to turn on your space heating

Case Study Example

Patrick’s 4 bed detached house of 150m2 (1615ft2) had an annual heating bill of €1,700, due largely to no time or temperature control of the space and water heating. He couldn’t heat water effectively without turning on all the radiators and/or the electric immersion heater. Even when heat was only needed for one room, every room in the house had to be heated. Stephen obtained grant aid for €500 and had some simple control measures installed; the heating system was divided into 4 zones (3 for space heating and 1 for hot water), via a 7 day programmer with room and cylinder thermostats and a motorised control valve. Now he can have a different temperature in his living room, bathrooms and bedrooms and have them on at different times of the day to suit him.

 

These new and simple measures have reduced his annual fuel bill by 30% - an annual saving of over €400 per year.

Do I Need Heating Controls

You can do a quick check on your heating control requirements by answering the simple questions below. If you answer No to all or some of the below questions, it would be beneficial for you to install some heating controls:

• Have you temperature and time control on your boiler that you can set for different days of the week?
• Have you a separate time and temperature control for your hot water cylinder?
• Can you have your bedrooms and kitchen at different temperatures at different times of the day
• Can you heat your domestic hot water without switching on your radiators or an electric immersion heater?
• Can you turn on your heating without heating your domestic hot water?
• Can you easily adjust the heat output from radiators in the rooms you use most often?

Heating Controls Upgrade

The minimum requirement for heating controls upgrade on the Home Energy Saving scheme is:

• Two (2) zones (space and water) with 7 day programmer (time and temperature) control and
• boiler interlock PLUS
• Time and Temperature control of electric immersion heater PLUS
• Either 1 more zone control or 3 TRV’s

Most heating systems can be easily retrofitted to cover these requirements.
